Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn A&E Expansion

Project Description:

The project comprised the expansion of the Accident and Emergency Department into the former medical records area, including associated MEP modifications (ventilation, heating, BMS, medical gases etc).

The works have specifically included:

  • Provision of 7nr new bays, examination and treatment rooms (including mental health rooms), Staff bases, WC facilities and relocation of A&E store.

  • Asbestos removal and strip-out activities.

  • Installation of a new external AHU and chiller to

the southern elevation of the main building.

  • New chilled water and LTHW installation at the roof level to serve the new chiller.

  • Modifications to external fire road area (to accommodate new AHU).

Key Challenges:

  • Working in a busy operational hospital environment and ensuring clear segregation between construction works and QEH staff, the public and patients.

  • Constraints associated with the above plus adhering to specific Client procedures for deliveries, working hours, and aligning with hospital clinical procedures.

  • Robust traffic management and segregation during the works due to proximity of contractor compound and external works area (AHU and chiller) to MAJAX Store, the blue light route leading to Ambulance bays and A&E entrance.

  • Operational fire road to the south; access was required at all times during the works in case of emergency and fire tender access requirements. A phasing plan (including procedures for both day and night arrangements), was developed by the Principal Contractor (in conjunction with the QEH Fire Officer) to coordinate works along the fire road (both construction and plant installation and delivery operations).
