Project description
As part of the National Gallery’s 200th anniversary celebrations, the NG200 project involved a series of carefully considered interventions to the Sainsbury Wing. Originally completed in the 1980s, the Wing has been sensitively upgraded to enhance the visitor arrival experience through architectural improvements to its external façade, foyer, and mezzanine.
In our role as CDM Principal Designer Advisor to Purcell, we supported the delivery of a complex scope of works that included enabling the first phase of a future underground connection to the historic Wilkins Building. This initial phase also provided new cloakroom, accessible toilet, and baby-changing facilities, key upgrades to meet the expectations of a modern and diverse visitor base.
Further interventions included the reconfiguration of the Wing’s entrance to reimagine the visitor welcome, the transformation of the Gallery’s Learning Centre to expand its educational capabilities, and the creation of a new members’ lounge at the ground floor of the Wilkins Building.
