Project description
The Portico Library, a Grade II* listed building in Manchester designed in the Greek Revival style, is undergoing a major refurbishment to reclaim and enhance all three levels of the building—currently divided between a library, bar, and basement. The project aims to significantly improve the visitor experience through the reconfiguration of the café, basement, and ground floor layouts, the creation of a dedicated event space, and the rationalisation of the first floor.
Accessibility will be enhanced with step-free access throughout, and new plant installations will support a more sustainable and energy-efficient environment. The refurbishment respects the building’s historical significance while upgrading its functionality for modern use.
As a Grade II* listed building, careful planning and coordination are required to preserve original architectural elements, including restrictions on alterations to the historic fabric. Structural limitations of the existing roof present challenges for the installation of new plant, requiring detailed assessments and potential strengthening works.
