Project description

The redevelopment of the Western Range marks the third phase of the British Museum’s Masterplan – one of the most significant cultural redevelopment projects in the world. This vision aims to transform the British Museum into a world-leading cultural and educational space fit for the 21st century.

The Project not only involves the physical rebuilding, redesign, and restoration of key areas, but also a complete rethink of how the collection is presented to inspire future generations.

The Western Range comprises ten interlinked buildings developed over the last 190 years as additions to Sir Robert Smirke’s original Grade I listed quadrangle. This section of the Museum presents complex challenges in design coordination, heritage conservation, and logistical delivery. The Western Range redevelopment is the most extensive renovation in the Museum’s history.

Key features of the project include:

  • Preservation and enhancement of historic architecture: original Grade I listed features will be restored.
  • Blending historic and contemporary architecture: various new galleries will be constructed alongside the existing historic buildings.
  • Improved circulation and accessibility: the interior layout will be reconfigured to enhance movement and accessibility for all visitors.
